Scots Music, Song and Dance

SMG muscians

The Scots Music group is one of Britain's largest traditional music projects with over 500 participants. The group is affiliated to the Adult Learning Project and funded by the Scottish Arts Council.

Traditional music has been passed on by memory and listening. Once you are confident and have a repertoire committed to memory, it stays with you for life. There is no need to read music. There are five levels of tuition for adults aged 16 years and over, from absolute beginners to intermediate and advanced levels. Instruments include fiddle, whistle, accordion, mandolin, small-pipes, bagpipes, guitar and mixed instruments. There are also classes in song, ceilidh dance and Scots step dance.

The classes are friendly and non-competitive and instruments can be hired. In addition to the weekly music programme there are weekend workshops, pub sessions, ceilidh dances, festivals and ongoing involvement in community events.
